On Happier News…

Filed under: General — Chris Parker @ 06:17

Well, I don’t get on here and bitch often like in my last post so I thought I better make amends with a new post on happier news!

I went out last night with 4 other guys from work and such to downtown Harrisburg. We started off at Scott’s with the $1 drafts happyhour (which runs for 2 hours) as well as their half price appetizers. No one can say how much of the precious liquid was downed but I can say it was at least 15 kegs* worth.

From there, we adventured far and wide to the Irish pub 2 doors down. At this time the drinking pace was starting to waver (especially on my part). After deciding we were hungry again and eating some different appetizers it was off to the Gingerbreadman pub where the night was finished out with some games of pool and darts. Not a bad night you may say especially since I did not have a hangover to show for it!

The work picnic is on Sunday which should be fun. We are going to Mt Gretna Lake where work is putting on some food for the afternoon.

Anyway’s, cheers for now!

* The unit of measure of a Keg may vary with the amount of Alcohol consumed in one given sitting.

Building Credit

Filed under: General — Chris Parker @ 06:06

Well Ladies and Gentlemen, I got another Credit Card denial letter in the mail today. This time Capital One decided not to give me a piece of plastic with a little Visa or Mastercard logo on it.

It has been around 2-3 months since I last applied for a credit card. The last one I got denied for was a secured visa from Wells Fargo.

I don’t understand why it is so hard to get a credit rating in this country. I got my Mastercard back in Aus no problem at all. At the time I was only casual and not earning a lot of money, living at home but they still gave me one.

Now, I am earning a lot more money, I have money saved away, I have a newer car and they won’t give me a credit card. I have been here properly (all visa’d up, working direct for ARM) for almost 6 months now and I still don’t rank for a credit score from ANY of the three credit reporting agencies. If I had BAD credit, I would not have any problem getting the sort of credit cards I have been applying for.

The main reason I financed my Car was to help build my credit score. I didn’t really need the finance as I paid over half of the loan off as soon as my first letter came in from Honda. I have paid everything on time since I have been here so sorry to be a grumble bum but I am not a fan of the credit score system!

Oh No! Uptime gone!

Filed under: General — Chris Parker @ 02:29

I logged into the server this morning and hit up the ‘w’ command… I was a little shocked with the results:

[@myserver log]# w
  1:10am  up 12 days,  3:03,  1 user,  load average: 0.10, 0.09, 0.03
USER     TTY      FROM              LOGIN@   IDLE   JCPU   PCPU  WHAT
 pts/1    c-68-39-235-113. 12:40am  0.00s  0.38s  0.05s  w

I was expecting to see an uptime of 500+ days. As you can see there is an uptime of only 12 days! I started searching through the logs but there was nothing to indicate a system reboot or crash. After looking at some more logs for services and also seeing nothing indicating that the service had restarted, I started googling around.

It has now come to my attention that there is a bug in some older versions of the linux kernel which causes the uptime to reset after 497 days (without system reboot). I had a look at my project uptime logs and this is what I got:

1. 29.03.2005 09:39 GMT   08.08.2006 12:01 GMT   1y 132d 02h 21m 27s
2. 08.08.2006 12:05 GMT   active session   12d 02h 55m 23s

Sure enough it had reset after 497 days (365 + 132). There are plenty of pages on the net about it if you fancy some lite reading:

Oh well, since I am now back to zippo uptime, it is probably well and truely time for a system upgrade :-)

La Junta

Filed under: General — Chris Parker @ 07:10

Well today is Monday and all being normal, it would be a work day…. but today is special.. it rained :-) I am currently out in La Junta, Colorado working on the Pueblo bombing range. I am not doing data collection this time though, I am part of the reacquire team. We are running around with a GPS marking targets.

I was actually pulled off a pump testing job to come out here. I was working up in Northern PA near Hazleton. It was cool to do something different even though it involved getting up at odd hours to visit the flowmeter to make sure everything is alright.

La Junta is a pretty small town with a few Hotels, places to eat, businesses and surprise, surprise.. a Walmart. The internet access at the hotel is not crash hot but it is sorta nice to be off it for a while.

There is not a lot more going on at the moment and I should be back home in a week.
